Patient Information

Kybella is an injectable treatment that reduces submental fat, often known as a “double chin.” Proper before and aftercare is essential to minimize side effects and enhance results. Here’s a guide to help you prepare and recover effectively:

Beforecare

1. Consultation: Schedule a thorough consultation with a qualified healthcare provider to discuss your goals, medical history, and any potential risks.

2. Discontinue Blood Thinners: Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E at least one week before your treatment, unless prescribed by your doctor.

3. Limit Alcohol and Smoking: Try to avoid alcohol consumption and smoking at least 48 hours prior to your treatment, as they can increase the risk of bruising and delay the healing process.

4. Healthy Diet and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water to ensure your body is in optimal condition for healing.

5. Supplements: Consult with your provider to see if arnica or bromelain supplements are recommended to help minimize bruising or swelling.

6. Avoid Extensive Facial Procedures: Refrain from any major dental work or other facial treatments for about two weeks before and after Kybella injections to minimize complications.

Aftercare

1. Ice Application: Apply ice packs briefly (around 15 minutes at a time) to the treated area in the first 24-48 hours post-treatment to minimize swelling and discomfort. Wrap ice packs in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.

2. Avoid Touching or Massaging: Do not massage or rub the area, as this can increase irritation and swelling.

3. Head Elevation: Sleep with your head elevated on pillows for the first few nights to reduce swelling.

4. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief, like acetaminophen, can be taken if needed, but continue to avoid blood-thinning medications unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.

5. Monitor Swelling and Bruising: Swelling, bruising, and a feeling of fullness are common after Kybella injections and may last several days to weeks. However, if you notice unusual symptoms or excessive discomfort, contact your healthcare provider.

6. Hydration and Light Diet: Maintain good hydration and eat light meals, especially if you notice any discomfort while swallowing due to swelling.

7. Avoid Strenuous Activities: Steer clear of intense exercise or activities that may exacerbate swelling for about 48 hours post-treatment.

8. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all follow-up appointments to assess your progress and discuss any concerns or need for additional treatments.

9. Limitations on Skincare Products: Keep the treated area clean but avoid using makeup or skincare products for at least 24 hours or as advised by your provider.

By following these before and aftercare guidelines, you can help ensure a smoother recovery process and optimal results from your Kybella treatment. Always adhere to any personalized instructions given by your healthcare provider, as individual needs can vary.
